“And it broke down in this very posh area of Beverly Hills,” Octavia Spencer said of her car, telling the story on The Graham Norton Show in 2020, as Stylist reported. “It was about 25 years ago, The Matrix had just come out,” Spencer told Norton. “I was on my way to pick up a script to read for an audition.” “There was a café and there were all these people sitting out there but nobody would help me.”
“Then all of a sudden this guy comes up with his sunglasses and motorcycle helmet and I knew immediately it was Keanu Reeves,” she said. “He was [saying] ‘Do you need some help?’” “I thought he was going to get in the car so I got out of the car to push. He said ‘No I’m going to push, you get in.’” “So he pushed me out of the street,” she said, and “when people realised it was Keanu Reeves helping me, everybody came down to help.”
Reeves has told it too. In his 2019 Geek Bomb interview, HuffPost reported, “Reeves did, however, confirm that he once pulled over on his motorcycle to help a driver whose car had broken down, and the driver ended up being Octavia Spencer.” By then she had an Oscar: for the 84th Academy Awards in 2012, the Academy lists “Octavia Spencer” as the “Winner” for “Actress in a Supporting Role,” for “The Help.”
His Matrix stunt double tells another story. SYFY WIRE writes that “he had an excellent stunt double: Chad Stahelski,” who remembers that “There was a casting-call audition for a martial arts stuntman to double Keanu Reeves.” Stahelski, later the “John Wick 3” director, “shared his own stories in a separate interview with Geek Bomb,” HuffPost reported, from when he was “working on ‘The Matrix’ trilogy as a stunt double and stunt coordinator.” By his account, as HuffPost summed it up, Reeves “even secured a Harley-Davidson motorcycle for each of the 12 doubles involved in one of the iconic fight sequences.”
In the 2019 interview, HuffPost wrote, “the ‘John Wick 3’ star was told he’s been described as the ‘nicest guy in the world,’” and he reacted by “avoiding eye contact with the interviewer while squirming in his seat.” “Oh, that’s ridiculous,” the actor shot back, and: “Anyway, it’s nice to hear but it’s not true. It’s nice to hear.”

Notes
Her account: the breakdown is Octavia Spencer’s own story, told for laughs on The Graham Norton Show in 2020 (as Stylist printed it), so “nobody would help” and “everybody came down to help” are her words, and this page tells it in her words. Reeves confirmed it in his 2019 Geek Bomb interview, as HuffPost reported; Geek Bomb’s own video wasn’t watched, so his words are as HuffPost printed them.
When: Spencer said it was “about 25 years ago” (she was speaking in 2020) and that “The Matrix had just come out”; the two don’t point to the same year, so the Short gives no year, only her Matrix marker, with “she said.”
The Harleys: the twelve Harley-Davidsons come from HuffPost’s summary of Chad Stahelski’s Geek Bomb interview, not from his own quoted words, so the Short says “his old stunt double says.” Retellings elsewhere add a price for each bike or name a particular film; they weren’t re-read for this story, so the Short gives no price, model or film title.
The Oscar: Spencer won Actress in a Supporting Role for “The Help” at the 84th Academy Awards in 2012 (the Academy); the Short says only “long before her Oscar.”
Keanu Reeves, Octavia Spencer and Chad Stahelski are alive. Only their own published words and published reporting are used; personal details from her telling and unverified rumors about him are left out, and nothing here goes into their private lives.
Pictures: no photo exists of the day itself: the breakdown, the café, her car or Reeves on his motorcycle then. Octavia Spencer is speaking and laughing at a Hidden Figures news conference at Kennedy Space Center on December 12, 2016 (two photos by Kim Shiflett, NASA Kennedy), and at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2016 (Gordon Correll, cropped to remove a bystander). Keanu Reeves is in motorcycle leathers at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England on June 25, 2016, not on the day he helped her (Matthew Lamb, cropped); at a São Paulo state government meeting on April 3, 2019 (Governo do Estado de São Paulo); laughing into his hand at his San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 27, 2024 (Chris Roth); and at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2025 (Gabriel Hutchinson). Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is seen on September 11, 2010; it is not the street where her car broke down (Prayitno). Chad Stahelski is at the “Wick is Pain” premiere in Santa Monica on May 8, 2025 (Kevin Paul). The Harley-Davidson tank badge, on a 2003 Dyna Low Rider photographed in 2009, is a stand-in, not one of the bikes in his stunt double’s story (GPGamble). The other people in these photos are not named.
