“I had no prospects, no job, was still sort of riding the glory of high school,” Chris Pratt told Vanity Fair in 2017. He was “back in Lake Stevens, exactly where he’d started,” the magazine wrote, when a friend stepped in: “He saw that and bought me a ticket to Hawaii, where he’d been living.” As ABC News put it: “Pratt moved to Maui at age 19.”
“There was a van with a couch, a tent with a blanket,” Vanity Fair wrote, and ABC News recalled “his days sleeping in the van or in a tent on the beach”; in 2014 he posted a photo of it: “This is the van I used to live in!!!” (CBS News). “Pratt got a job at Bubba Gump Shrimp,” Vanity Fair wrote, and TODAY: “When he was 19, Pratt began working at a Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant in Hawaii while living out of his van.” He didn’t often work there: “I was always giving away my shifts because I didn’t have much overhead. I lived in a van.”
“I wasn’t even supposed to take a shift that day,” he said. That day, Vanity Fair wrote, “Rae Dawn Chong, an actress … walked into Bubba Gump Shrimp”; “I think they were on vacation in Kihei,” Pratt said. Vanity Fair tells it this way: “He says, ‘I’m your server.’ She says, ‘I’m Rae Dawn Chong.’ He says, ‘You’re a movie star.’ She says, ‘You’re cute. Do you act?’” “He does not have a phone—he lives in a van—so gives her the number of his friend.”
She put him in her film. “‘Yeah,’ he said, ‘I was the lead.’” Fox News: “Chong cast Pratt in the lead role as Jeff in her directorial debut, the 2000 horror-comedy short film ‘Cursed Part 3.’” But “When Pratt learned the movie would be shot in L.A., he told Chong he’d have to bow out. He couldn’t afford a plane ticket.” “I had 60 bucks,” he told Vanity Fair. “And she was like, ‘Sweetie, we’ll fly you there.’”
His verdict on the film: “It was the worst movie I’d ever seen.” But “The whole reason that movie came along was just so I could be brought to Hollywood.” In 2019, TODAY reported, he looked back on Instagram: “Twenty years ago I was a waiter at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company,” he wrote. “Please tip your server.” And: “Leave at least 20%. Also leave some shrimp.”

Notes
The year: the sources tell it differently. ABC News dates the meeting to 2000, Fox News dates her short film to 2000, and his 2019 post says he was a waiter “Twenty years ago”; ABC News, TODAY and Fox News put him at 19. The Short gives no year, only his age.
Her words and the film: Rae Dawn Chong’s lines here are only as Pratt told them to Vanity Fair, and “the worst movie I’d ever seen” is his own verdict on the film, not ours. Which Bubba Gump Shrimp on Maui he worked at isn’t known; of Chong, Pratt said only, “I think they were on vacation in Kihei.”
Left out: his friend’s name (a private person), and his life on Maui beyond this story. Fox News’s piece is about a stage name he almost used; only its description of the film is used here.
Chris Pratt and Rae Dawn Chong are alive. Only Pratt’s own published words (Vanity Fair, 2017; his posts of 2014 and 2019, as CBS News and TODAY reported them) and the reporting of 2014 to 2026 are used; Rae Dawn Chong is not shown, and nothing about her or her film is told beyond his words and Fox News’s description. Nothing about either one’s life beyond this story is told.
Pictures: no free photo shows his Maui years, the van, Rae Dawn Chong or the day she walked in. Chris Pratt is at the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Japan premiere in Tokyo on June 27, 2018 (two photos by Dick Thomas Johnson, one cropped); at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2016 (two photos, cropped), July 21, 2018, and July 20, 2013 (Gage Skidmore); and waving on stage on July 22, 2014, promoting Guardians of the Galaxy (Martin Eckert). The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on Front Street in Lahaina is seen in June 2019 (Sharon Hahn Darlin); it may not be the one where he worked. The Kihei coast in September 2004 (Michael Oswald), a sunset on Maui on January 2, 2005 (Didier B), a plane taking off at Kahului Airport on January 26, 2018, not his flight (Forest and Kim Starr), Main Street in Lake Stevens on June 20, 2011 (ECTran71), and Front Street in Lahaina at dusk on March 28, 2009 (Scott R. Schultz) show the places in other years. The other people in these photos are not named.
