“I have faced some of the toughest Superstars in WWE history and I’ve never encountered more bravery or toughness than I see in each wish kid that I meet,” John Cena said in 2015, when Make-A-Wish America marked his 500th wish. Make-A-Wish grants wishes to “children with life-threatening medical conditions,” and to Cena, “There is no more humbling experience than a child who could ask for anything in the world asking to meet me.” Guinness World Records says “he is the most requested celebrity.”
“He granted his first wish in 2002,” NPR reported. In 2022, Guinness World Records said he “has set a new record for the most wishes granted through the Make-A-Wish Foundation with 650,” and CBS Sports reported that “Cena set the new record by granting his 650th wish on July 19.” Back in 2015, Make-A-Wish had said: “Since the founding of Make-A-Wish in 1980 no other celebrity has granted as many wishes as Cena.” His rule, as NPR quoted it: “I just drop everything. I don’t care what I’m doing.”
In 2017 the surprise was his. “In a new Cricket Wireless YouTube video, the TODAY favorite with the heart of gold sits in an empty room to read aloud from a batch of fan letters, unaware that the letter writers are listening to him in a nearby room,” TODAY reported on August 22, 2017. “It’s the letter from the tiniest fan, Tyler …, that most moves the burly Superstar.” TODAY wrote of “a wristband the former WWE champ once gave him in a crowded venue”; “They had previously been to a WWE event where Cena gave the kid his post-match wristband,” Audacy recalled.
Then “his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer,” TODAY wrote. In the video, as CBS New York quoted him, Tyler said: “When my mom was having her six-hour surgery, I gave her the [John Cena] wristband, and told her to never give up.” “One by one, Cena chokes up at stories of illness and despair made a little better by his advice to never, ever give up,” TODAY wrote.
“When the young boy bursts through a paper wall to surprise his idol, Cena leaps up to embrace him,” TODAY reported. “The two are joined by Tyler’s mom, who informs the star she’s now cancer-free.” “Coolest surprise ever!” Cena told him, and then: “You’re extremely strong, you know that?”

Notes
The record: on October 3, 2022, Guinness World Records corrected two figures that many outlets still repeat, about the runner-up’s total and about a milestone wish in 2012, so neither is used here. 650 is the 2022 count; no newer official total was found, so the Short dates it (“Guinness counted”).
The video was an advert, made by Cricket Wireless, which the Short calls a phone company. Tyler appears in the sources as a fan Cena once gave a wristband to at a WWE event, not as a wish child, and the Short tells the two stories apart.
The wristband: Audacy says Tyler gave it to his mom before her six-hour procedure; in CBS New York’s quote he says “When my mom was having her six-hour surgery.” The Short’s “For her six-hour surgery” fits both. Fightful’s story is undated and says the video is “roughly two years old.” TODAY says Cena “chokes up,” and its headline says the letters “moved him to tears”; the Short says he choked up.
John Cena is alive. Tyler was a child: only the first name his family used in the published video is given; his surname, his age (no source gives it), his mother’s name and where they live are not, his surname is cut from quotes (“…”), and neither he nor his mother is shown, nor is any stand-in. His mother’s illness, surgery and recovery are told only as the family told them in that public video, as TODAY, CBS New York and Audacy reported. The other fans in the video and the wish children in Make-A-Wish’s releases are not named. Only Cena’s published words and the reporting of 2015 to 2022 are used; nothing about his life beyond this story is told.
Pictures: no free photo shows the 2017 video, Tyler, his mother, his letter or any wish visit. John Cena is at San Diego Comic-Con on July 20, 2018 (two photos by Gage Skidmore); at the Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest on October 22, 2016, once in a “NEVER GIVE UP” cap (two photos by Gage Skidmore); at San Diego Comic-Con on July 26, 2025, in his Peacemaker costume (Gage Skidmore); throwing his hat to the crowd at WWE Raw in July 2006 (Lori Hurley); and in the ring at a WWE live show at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, on March 25, 2018, not the show where he gave Tyler the wristband (Mmsnapplez). The stack of envelopes is a stock photo, not the fan letters (Martin Vorel). The other people in these photos are not named.
